|
Suicidal rate has been increasing during the past years in Korea, which led social scientists and psychiatrists to speculate on the possible underlying causes of suicide. This article reviews the psychoanalytic theories of suicide from the perspective of aggression, disintegration anxiety, structural theory especially about ego-regression, narcissism, death instinct, object relations theory, structural instability of the self-representation, fusion with the victim theory and adolescent suicide. This article also describes a case of a young female panic disorder patient who made a suicidal attempt. In this case, Freud’s view on the relationship between abandonment, loss, and suicide was suggested as a key mechanism of her suicidal attempt and the psychoanalytic psychotherapy was very useful for her treatment.
